Year two of no booze: What now?

Year two of no booze: What now?
Today is exactly 15 months sober for me. I have not had a sip of alcohol since December 3, 2018. I've become so accustomed to not drinking anymore, that it almost seems like no big deal. But it is. Three years ago today, I could barely get through a night without a glass of wine, picking up a bottle of wine any day of the week to replenish a dwindling supply. While the first year of my sobriety focused on on surviving a year without booze, the second year has taken on a new experience all together.  Continue reading

Dry January tips to stay sober

Dry January tips to stay sober
It's almost the midway point for Dry January. If you've made it this far, congratulations! For many people, it's a huge challenge to even go one week without a drink. Two weeks? Double the struggle. If you're hoping to survive the entire 31 days without alcohol, but are now wondering if you can do it, here are some quick tips to stay the course. (And P.S., yes, you can do it.) Continue reading

One year no booze: Learnings

One year no booze: Learnings
I've passed the one year mark since I quit drinking alcohol. As of December 3, 2019, I've been one year sober. I'm super proud of this accomplishment! It wasn't easy, but so worth it. Here's what I learned from the experience: Continue reading

Top ways to quit alcohol for good

Top ways to quit alcohol for good

With the first year anniversary since I quit drinking alcohol creeping up, I'd like to share what my top strategies were for staying sober for a year. The strange experience of being sober at a concert

The strange experience of being sober at a concert
I'm not a big concert-goer. Every once in a while a friend invites me to a concert in Toronto and I say yes. Last night was one of those occasions. With my boyfriend living 4000 km away, the social outings are slim this summer. So, when my girlfriend had an itch to head to Toronto to see Blue Rodeo and Sam Roberts Band outside, I jumped at it. Of course, as a former social drinker, the usual questions arose. Continue reading

Do this one thing to help you stop drinking alcohol

Do this one thing to help you stop drinking alcohol
I spent years trying to quit drinking, then failing, before I finally was able to fully commit to a sober lifestyle. While there are many strategies I used to adopt an alcohol-free life, I found this one simple action was instrumental to keeping me on the path to quit drinking alcohol for good. Continue reading

250 days alcohol-free

250 days alcohol-free
Today marks the 250th alcohol-free day. When I shared this with my girlfriend on our walk this morning, she was very impressed. Good for you! she exclaimed. It felt good to hear her say that. After having gone this long without alcohol, it really doesn't feel like that huge of a deal. But, I have to recognize that it's a huge accomplishment, especially considering I could barely manage 30 days without booze only one year ago. Continue reading

Being the sober party girl

Being the sober party girl
Everyone looks forward to the weekends. That's a no-brainer. For those who enjoy a libation-filled weekend, a big part of the weekend plans often include get togethers -- neighbourhood parties, dinner parties, meeting for drinks on a patio. Like every other drinker I've ever known, I often couldn't wait to start sipping my favourite alcoholic bevies.  Continue reading
