Top ways to quit alcohol for good

Top ways to quit alcohol for good

With the first year anniversary since I quit drinking alcohol creeping up, I'd like to share what my top strategies were for staying sober for a year. While my goal was to reach one year without alcohol, now that I've (almost) reached it, I plan to continue on this path. The benefits to staying sober far outweigh the benefits of drinking.

The strange experience of being sober at a concert

The strange experience of being sober at a concert
I'm not a big concert-goer. Every once in a while a friend invites me to a concert in Toronto and I say yes. Last night was one of those occasions. With my boyfriend living 4000 km away, the social outings are slim this summer. So, when my girlfriend had an itch to head to Toronto to see Blue Rodeo and Sam Roberts Band outside, I jumped at it. Of course, as a former social drinker, the usual questions arose. Continue reading

Do this one thing to help you stop drinking alcohol

Do this one thing to help you stop drinking alcohol
I spent years trying to quit drinking, then failing, before I finally was able to fully commit to a sober lifestyle. While there are many strategies I used to adopt an alcohol-free life, I found this one simple action was instrumental to keeping me on the path to quit drinking alcohol for good. Continue reading

250 days alcohol-free

250 days alcohol-free
Today marks the 250th alcohol-free day. When I shared this with my girlfriend on our walk this morning, she was very impressed. Good for you! she exclaimed. It felt good to hear her say that. After having gone this long without alcohol, it really doesn't feel like that huge of a deal. But, I have to recognize that it's a huge accomplishment, especially considering I could barely manage 30 days without booze only one year ago. Continue reading

Being the sober party girl

Being the sober party girl
Everyone looks forward to the weekends. That's a no-brainer. For those who enjoy a libation-filled weekend, a big part of the weekend plans often include get togethers -- neighbourhood parties, dinner parties, meeting for drinks on a patio. Like every other drinker I've ever known, I often couldn't wait to start sipping my favourite alcoholic bevies.  Continue reading

Take the gift of a new routine

Take the gift of a new routine
Although a change in routine may be a strange way to describe embracing sobriety, it was actually one of the biggest hurdles I faced in overcoming my reliance on the stuff. Routines, after all, by their very nature provide us comfort and security. We come to rely on our daily patterns so intensely that when one of them falls away, it can be extremely destabilizing and distressing. Continue reading

Going to bed at 9:30pm on Saturday

Going to bed at 9:30pm on Saturday
I'm falling asleep on the couch as I watch an episode of Amazing Race. I can't keep my eyes open after a busy day of errands, long walks, gardening and hanging out with my son. It's just past 9 p.m. I'm tired and, frankly, my bed is summoning me. I should mention that it's a Saturday night.  Continue reading

Why I blog about not drinking

Why I blog about not drinking
There are two main reasons why I blog about my sobriety journey. One is for my own personal benefit and the other is for those considering, or are already on, a similar path. I want to be clear that I do not blog to guilt or shame anyone into quitting alcohol. I drank far too much, and for too long, to judge anyone on his or her drinking habits.  Continue reading
